We all get frustrated, anxious, or depressed, especially when everything seems to be going wrong. In those times it’s good to remember that God loves us.

We all have those days where it seems nothing goes right. Sometimes, it’s multiple things that go wrong.

It can be quite frustrating when you’re trying to live life or accomplish a task, yet nothing is going the way it should. Frustration can lead to anger. Sometimes, it can lead to anxiety and depression.

When we get frustrated, or sink into anxiety and depression, it can be difficult to see an upside to things. The idea of something positive occurring can seem like a fantasy.

The other day I one of those days. Well, two of those days. It was then that God used that day’s passage to give me a much-needed reminder.

Here’s the passage:

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

– Romans 8:37-39 (ESV)

God used this passage to help me deal with my emotional state.

Frustrating Night led to Frustrating Morning

The night before reading these three verses, something happened that set me off. I can’t recall what it was, but I do recall that it frustrated me to the point of anxiety.

I was stressed, worried, and starting to think things were falling apart.

These feelings didn’t subside overnight. The next morning I went to work feeling the same way. However, knowing my past, I feared two things: that my anxiety would lead to depression, and that how I felt would negatively impact my interactions with others.

Before I started work I decided I needed to deal with my emotions.

But I feared I was unable to do it on my own; I was too weak to overcome my thoughts and feelings.

So, I turned to God.

God Reminded Me of How He Feels About Me

I sat at my desk, picked up my phone, and asked God to show me what he wanted me to know. I also told him how I felt and what I was thinking, and that I needed help to deal with my frustrations and anxiety.

Then I read the passage above.

It took a few readings, but God’s message came through clear: despite how I felt, God loves me!

He showed me that nothing in this world can separate me from his love. I can’t. My feelings can’t. My thoughts can’t. No other person. Not even spiritual beings could separate me from God’s love.

But it wasn’t merely his love; it was his love for me in Christ Jesus!

Therein lies the key to it: Jesus.

Safe in God’s Hands through Jesus Christ

God loved the world so much that he sent Jesus. That means that God has love for all creation. However, the love described in Romans is more intimate, more special. It’s God’s love through Jesus.

I have a relationship with God only because of my faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus laid down his life on the cross to pay for sin. Because of his sacrifice, I am forgiven of my sins, freed from the punishment of eternal death.

Jesus rose from the grave to give new life. Because of his resurrection, I am able to have a new lease on life, a new perspective, and a future hope.

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to comfort, guide, and strengthen. Because the Spirit is here, I am able to dwell in God’s presence every day, and he pray the prayer I need to pray even if I don’t have the words (cf. Rom 8:26).

I belong to God. God loves me. Not because of what I have done or who I am. Rather, he loves me because of who Jesus is what Jesus did. I put my faith in Christ alone and thus live in God’s grace.

That doesn’t mean life is perfect for me. I still struggle. I still have down times. But God reminded me that there is hope. There is an upside to things.

God reminded me that he loves me.

Bringing it Home

We all go through difficult times. We get frustrated, anxious, and depressed. In those times, it can be hard to see a silver lining.

When we start feeling this way, it’s good to be reminded that, regardless of how we feel about ourselves and our lives, God still loves us.

You can experience this love, too. If you’ll trust Jesus, believe that he paid the penalty for sin and that he rose again, then you can experience this love.

Will you trust Jesus today?
